Toothache That Won’t Go Away? It Could Be a Sign You Need a Root Canal

We all get the occasional twinge of a toothache, maybe after something cold or when we’re brushing a little too hard. But when that pain becomes persistent, severe, or just won’t go away, it might be trying to tell you something more serious.

At XO Dental in Preston, we often see patients who’ve been living with a lingering toothache, hoping it will pass on its own. But in some cases, ongoing dental pain could be a sign that the inner part of your tooth is infected and that you may need root canal treatment to save it.

So, if you’re experiencing dental discomfort, how do you know whether it’s something you should come to see us about?

In this article, we’ll explain what causes tooth pain, when it might signal a deeper issue, and how root canal treatment can stop the problem in its tracks, without needing to remove your tooth.

Why Does a Toothache Happen?

Toothache can have a number of causes, ranging from mild to severe. Common triggers include:

  • Tooth decay (cavities)
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Worn-down enamel
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • Grinding your teeth (bruxism)

Most minor aches and sensitivity can be managed with good oral care or a simple filling. But if the pain becomes intense, constant, or is accompanied by swelling or discolouration, there’s a chance the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth) is infected or inflamed.

That’s where root canal treatment may come in.

What Is a Root Canal, and Why Might I Need One?

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged tissue from inside your tooth. This tissue, known as the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth grow. Once fully developed, however, your tooth can survive without it.

If bacteria reach this inner area, usually through deep decay, cracks, or trauma, they can cause pain, infection, and swelling. Left untreated, this can lead to an abscess (a buildup of pus), bone loss, and eventually, the need to extract the tooth.

Root canal treatment allows us to clean out the infection, seal the tooth, and restore it with a crown or filling, helping you keep your natural smile for years to come.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

A persistent toothache is the most common warning sign, but there are other symptoms to look out for. These include:

  • Pain that lingers after hot or cold food and drink
  • A throbbing or pulsating sensation in your tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the painful tooth
  • A small lump or boil on the gum (a sign of infection)
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • Pain when chewing or putting pressure on the tooth
  • A bad taste in your mouth that doesn’t go away

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s best not to ignore them. Even if the pain comes and goes, it’s still possible that an infection is developing underneath the surface.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and we completely understand why. Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but thanks to modern techniques and gentle anaesthetics, the procedure itself is no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

In fact, the aim of a root canal is to relieve the pain, not cause it. Most patients report feeling much better very soon after treatment.

What Happens During the Procedure?

If we suspect you need a root canal, we’ll begin with a full assessment, including digital X-rays to see the roots and surrounding bone. If treatment is recommended, we’ll numb the area to ensure your complete comfort throughout.

The infected pulp is then carefully removed, the inner space is cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed to prevent further infection. In most cases, we’ll recommend a crown afterwards to strengthen and protect the tooth in the long term.

Root canal treatment is usually completed over one or two appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth.

How Long Will Recovery Take?

Most people return to their normal routine the very next day. You may feel a slight tenderness or mild aching for a couple of days, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief and good care at home.

We’ll give you full aftercare advice, and we’re always here to answer any questions or check on your progress.

What If I Leave It Too Long?

Unfortunately, tooth infections don’t go away on their own. The pain may ease temporarily, but the underlying issue will continue to develop. If left untreated, the infection can spread to nearby teeth, gums, or even into the jawbone, leading to more complex treatment or the loss of the tooth altogether.

That’s why it’s so important to seek help as soon as you notice something isn’t right. The earlier we can treat it, the easier and more effective the outcome will be.

We believe in doing everything we can to preserve your natural teeth. Root canal treatment is a safe, proven, and effective way to eliminate pain and infection while keeping your tooth in place.

We know the idea of root canal treatment can be daunting, but with our gentle, patient-centred approach, you’ll be well cared for at every stage. Our experienced team will explain everything clearly, answer your questions, and make sure you feel calm and confident about your treatment.

Adam was recommended to me and it was the best advice! Adam and the team looked after me incredibly well and the results are just amazing. My own teeth were very worn down and I had completely stopped any open mouthed smiling and always laughed behind my hand. Adam explained the possibilities, found the best option for me and the work was completed in a couple of weeks. My gorgeous new composite bonded teeth and I spent all day smiling at a recent wedding. I will always be grateful to Adam for the advice and for the results!
