Gingivitis and Periodontitis Explained

Those occasional spots of blood you may notice on your toothbrush are an early indicator of gum disease. Tartar along your gum line will irritate the soft tissue, causing mild inflammation and redness.

At this stage, it’s gingivitis—the mildest form of gum disease that’s easiest to treat. Usually, minor lifestyle changes and improvements in your hygiene routine will reverse gingivitis.

But untreated, gingivitis worsens to become periodontitis. The symptoms of advanced gum disease include the formation of pockets around the roots of your teeth. As bacteria get further down this widening gap, your jawbone deteriorates, and the already loose teeth fall out.

What Is Periodontal Treatment?

If we spot mild gum disease during a routine checkup, we may advise a visit to see our hygienist and suggest improvements to your current brushing routine. In more progressive cases, we will recommend periodontal treatments like root planing.

Root planing is a very deep clean for your teeth. We use advanced dental technology to get below the gumline, where we’ll remove any tartar and plaque from the roots of your teeth.
